Dayton is best known for being home to the Wright Brothers, and is rich in aviation history. The National Museum of the United States Air Force, located at nearby Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, is the world's largest and oldest museum dedicated to military aviation, and displays over 360 aircraft and missiles. You'll find the Wright Brothers' Wright Flyer III housed at nearby Carillon Historical Park, along with historical buildings and information on Dayton's most famous inhabitants, including inventors like Charles F. Kettering, and businessmen like John Henry Patterson.
History aside, Dayton has a rich culture that draws visitors from across the nation. The Dayton Art Institute is a haven for art fans, offering more than 20,000 objects on exhibit from various eras. The Boonshoft Museum of Discovery caters to children, displaying, among other things, an indoor zoo with close to 100 animals.
Festivals and shows are abundant in Dayton and its surrounding suburbs. The Vectren Dayton Air Show is one of the largest air shows in the country. The Dayton Celtic Festival offers arts, crafts, food, drink, and entertainment from local and travelling Celtic bands. Other festivals of note include the Dayton Blues Festival, Urban Nights, and the Dayton Reggae Fest. It's rare to find a weekend where there's nothing going on in the Gem City.
Fans of the outdoors can explore nature to their hearts' content in the more than 14,161 acres that comprise the Five Rivers MetroParks. Trails and activities attract runners, hikers, dog walkers, or anyone else who wants to get out and enjoy the fresh air. Those who prefer to explore the outdoors on two wheels frequently hit the bike trail system that extends from southwest Columbus all the way to the Ohio River near Cincinnati.
After all that exercise, Daytonians like to unwind with a cold beverage or a tasty meal. Dayton is having somewhat of a craft brewing revolution right now, with new breweries opening up every few months. Some breweries offer food, but others invite local food trucks to park close by so that beer enthusiasts can enjoy their brew with local food that ranges from meat pies and tacos to cupcakes. Families can find plenty of kid-friendly restaurants in Dayton itself and its surrounding suburbs.
